Introduction

China has eight Harrow schools in six cities. A ninth will open in Guangzhou this September. That sounds easy until you notice there are three types of Harrow schools in China. Each one serves different students. They follow unique curricula and accept different passports. Get this wrong and you will apply to a school that cannot accept your child.

This guide shows all eight campuses. It explains which ones foreign passport holders can attend. It compares fees. It also shows where Harrow China graduates go to university. Some go to Oxbridge, the Ivy League, Melbourne, Toronto, and Hong Kong.

The Three Types of Harrow School in China

Everything in this guide flows from one framework. AISL is a company based in Hong Kong. It runs Harrow International Schools in Asia. In mainland China, it has three school brands with the Harrow name.

Harrow International (哈罗国际)

An international school for foreign nationals. These campuses use a British curriculum. It starts in early years and goes through IGCSE and A-Level. Students are primarily foreign passport holders. The campuses are in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen Qianhai, and Haikou. Haikou is with the LiDe school. Guangzhou will open in September 2026.

Harrow Li De (哈罗礼德)

A bilingual private school. These campuses use the Chinese national curriculum and British methodology. They teach 70% of classes in English. The rest, 30%, are in Chinese. They accept both Chinese nationals and foreign families. The campuses are Hengqin (Zhuhai), Haikou, Chongqing, and Nanning.

Harrow HK Children (哈罗港人子弟)

Serves Hong Kong-registered families in Shenzhen Qianhai. This campus offers the Hong Kong DSE curriculum. It also provides an IB Diploma pathway as an option. It’s for HK residents who live or work on the mainland in the Greater Bay Area.

Many international families moving to China start with the Harrow International line. It’s a great first choice. The bilingual Li De campuses can fit foreign families in some cases. This guide shows you when that is.

Key Takeaways

AISL runs eight Harrow campuses in six Chinese cities. A ninth Harrow International School will open in Guangzhou in September 2026. Enrollment for the founding class is now open.

Harrow Shanghai has a five-year A-Level average of 67% A*/A and 42% A*. It consistently beats the UK national average of 27.8% A*/A. This makes it one of the best British curriculum schools in Asia.

Harrow International campuses are in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Haikou, and Guangzhou. They only accept foreign passport holders. Parents must have a valid work permit and residence permit for China.

AISL’s Class of 2025 received 1,650 university offers. They have about 20 placements at Oxbridge. There are also 20 combined acceptances from Ivy League schools, MIT, Stanford, and Caltech.

Secondary day tuition at Harrow International campuses varies. It costs USD 35,800 in Haikou and USD 55,400 in Shanghai. That’s 30 to 50% lower than similar UK boarding school fees.

Harrow Li De bilingual campuses in Hengqin, Haikou, Chongqing, and Nanning do not have passport restrictions. They provide 70% English instruction. This rises to 80% during IGCSE and A-Level years.

Harrow Hengqin’s first IGCSE cohort achieved 79% A*/A in 2024. They scored 100% A*/A in English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Chinese Second Language.

Can Foreign Families Attend Harrow China? Eligibility Explained

Harrow International campuses are in the following cities:

  • Beijing
  • Shanghai
  • Shenzhen Qianhai
  • Haikou
  • Guangzhou

They welcome foreign passport holders. Anyone from any nationality can apply. One parent must have a valid Chinese work permit. They also need a residence permit. A child arriving on a tourist visa cannot enroll.

Key point: Students of Chinese heritage with foreign passports are treated differently. It depends on the campus. Beijing is the most flexible — the school openly accepts students of all nationalities. Shanghai has strict rules. Both the child and the enrolling parent must have foreign passports.

They also need to be real residents in China as an expatriate family. Shenzhen Qianhai and Haikou have strict rules. The child must have a foreign passport. Also, at least one parent needs a foreign passport or a permanent residence card. Haikou International explicitly states this dual requirement on its admissions pages.

Harrow Li De campuses (Hengqin, Haikou, Chongqing, Nanning) carry no passport restrictions. These campuses are bilingual schools in China. They accept foreign students. This applies to all four locations. Compulsory education runs from Year 1 to Year 9. Local district rules may require one parent to have a residence permit. Foreign nationals with the relevant permit clear this requirement without difficulty.

Note on Li De: Kids with weak Chinese skills may struggle. Lessons like Chinese literature, moral education, and history can be tough. These subjects follow the national curriculum in Chinese. From Year 7 onward, IGCSE subjects begin. The Chinese-language load drops a lot. This helps foreign students thrive.

Harrow HK Children School (Shenzhen Qianhai) chooses Hong Kong families first. The school’s admissions documents say foreign nationals can apply. This means it’s still open. In practice, non-HK families join a lower-priority queue behind HKID holders. If your family isn’t aiming for the DSE curriculum, consider Harrow International in Qianhai. It’s a better fit for you.

Harrow Haikou has a “two schools, one campus” setup with a Harrow International track for foreign passport holders and a Harrow Li De bilingual track open to all. Harrow Little Lions Zhuhai is part of Hengqin campus and is not a separate school. Guangzhou (哈罗国际) opens September 2026 — admissions are live now.

What Is AISL and How Does Harrow China Connect to Harrow UK?

AISL stands for Asia International School Limited (亚洲国际学校有限公司). It is a company based in Hong Kong. Daniel Chiu founded it. The company opened its first Harrow International School in Bangkok in 1998. It entered mainland China with Harrow Beijing in 2005. Now, it runs 15 schools across Asia.

The connection to Harrow School, UK, is formal and contractual. Harrow School started in 1572. It was founded by Queen Elizabeth I with a Royal Charter. The trading branch is Harrow International Schools Limited (HISL). HISL allows AISL to use the Harrow name and brand. This is under a 30-year Master Franchise Agreement from 2022. AISL owns and runs all the schools. HISL checks on quality with regular inspections. They also have visits from governors each term. Every campus board must include two HISL members.

Harrow School has famous alumni. One is Winston Churchill. Another is poet Lord Byron. India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, went there too. Nobel Prize winner Lord Rayleigh is also a graduate. AISL has four key values: courage, honor, humility, and fellowship. They come from a long tradition of 450 years.

Accreditations

Harrow Shanghai is accredited by British Schools Overseas (BSO). This was confirmed in an inspection in April 2024. Harrow Beijing holds Council of International Schools (CIS) membership. Harrow Haikou Li De got COBIS accreditation in April 2025. It received WASC K–12 accreditation in May 2026. Now, it is one of four schools in China with both.

Where Harrow China Graduates Go to University

AISL achieved a record 1,650 university offers for the Class of 2025. About 50% came from globally ranked Top 50 universities. The network placed about 20 students at Oxford and Cambridge. It matched that number at the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, and Caltech combined. AISL’s strong trend continues. The Class of 2023 received 23 offers from Oxbridge and 17 from Ivy League schools.

The United Kingdom remains the dominant destination. Harrow Beijing’s Class of 2025 received 98 offers from UK universities, including 23 from G5 universities and 96 from World Top 50 universities. Harrow Shanghai sends 80% of its offer letters to G5 or Russell Group schools and has five consecutive years of Cambridge placements.

Harrow Shenzhen — UK Offers (2025)
  • Imperial
  • LSE
  • UCL
  • Manchester
  • King’s
  • Durham
  • Warwick
  • St Andrews

The United States is the second-largest destination. Harrow Beijing’s 2025 cohort received 84 offers from North America, including Yale, Cornell, and Columbia. Around 20 AISL students were accepted into the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, and Caltech in 2025. Harrow Shenzhen placed students at UCLA, UC Berkeley, NYU, and other US Top 50 schools.

Canada is consistently strong across all campuses. The University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill appear every year on destination lists from Beijing and Shenzhen. A Harrow Shanghai student won the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship — four years at the University of Toronto.

Hong Kong is the fastest-growing destination, particularly for Shenzhen graduates. HKU had 6 offers, HKUST 10, and CUHK 2 — from just 27 graduates. Australia: University of Melbourne had 4 offers and the University of Sydney had 7 from Shenzhen’s 2025 class.

Singapore note: NUS, NTU, and SMU placements are not in the 2024 or 2025 data from Harrow International campuses in mainland China. Families targeting Singapore should confirm the school’s current counseling coverage for this pathway.

University guidance starts in Year 9 at all campuses using the Unifrog platform. In Year 12, students meet with counselors and join weekly sessions covering UCAS and the Common Application.

A-Levels for Global University Admissions: What Every Family Needs to Know

A-Level qualifications are taken at the end of Year 13. They are the key entry requirement for all Harrow International campuses and are directly accepted by leading universities in every major destination country.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom — via UCAS (max. 5)
  • Cambridge: AAA to AA*A
  • Oxford: AAA to AAA
  • Imperial: AAA to AAA (by subject)
  • LSE: A*AA for economics
  • UCL: ABB to AAA by course

Harrow Beijing’s EPQ lowers UK conditional offers by one grade for A* earners.

🇺🇸 United States — Common Application

All Ivy League universities accept A-Levels. Students submit IGCSE grades and predicted A-Level grades.

  • Columbia: 6 credits per subject (up to 16)
  • Yale: Credit for A or B = AP 4 or 5
  • Stanford: Up to 10 credits per subject

SAT/ACT required at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Stanford. Columbia & NYU: test-optional. UC Berkeley & UCLA: test-blind.

🇦🇺 Australia — Direct Entry, No Foundation

  • Three A* = ATAR 95–99.95 (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW)
  • AAB = roughly ATAR 92–95
  • No SAT or ACT required
🇨🇦 Canada — No SAT or ACT Required

Three A-Levels at ABB or above typically sufficient for University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill.

  • McGill: Up to 30 credits — equivalent to one full year
  • McGill: English Lit/Language at B+ waives IELTS & TOEFL
🇭🇰 Hong Kong — Direct Entry
  • HKU: Minimum three A grades
  • HKUST & CUHK (top courses): AAA to A*A*A
🇸🇬 Singapore — NUS & NTU

NUS and NTU accept UK A-Levels. At least three A2 subjects required, grades matching the course. Medicine and law expect all-A profiles.

Harrow International Schools do not offer the IB Diploma. Every 哈罗国际 campus follows the British pathway: UK National Curriculum until Year 9, IGCSE for Years 10–11, and A-Level for Years 12–13.

Harrow Li De (哈罗礼德) Campuses — The Bilingual Option

The four Li De campuses are not diluted versions of Harrow International. They are a different product with a different purpose. The upper-school pathway at all four campuses leads to IGCSE and A-Level. AISL has begun sharing results for the first groups now taking exams. Lessons are 70% in English and 30% in Chinese during compulsory years. When IGCSE and A-Level courses start, it shifts to 70–80% English.

Admissions: How International Families Apply

Applications are submitted to each campus independently via OpenApply. There is no centralized AISL application. If you are comparing multiple cities, you apply to each separately.

1

Prepare Your Documents

All campuses require:

  • Applicant’s passport
  • Both parents’ passports
  • Birth certificate
  • China residence permit or visa pages for each family member
  • Last two years of school reports in English or officially translated
  • One teacher recommendation via OpenApply
  • Recent photographs

Shanghai additionally requires a parent employment letter and proof of Shanghai residence. Application fees: CNY 3,000–3,500 (non-refundable) for mainland campuses.

2

Sit the CAT4

All students from Year 2 and up take the CAT4 — the GL Assessment Cognitive Abilities Test. It covers verbal, non-verbal, quantitative, and spatial reasoning. It does not test curriculum knowledge. Students from any prior educational system approach it on equal terms.

Year 5 and above also complete a written English assessment. Secondary students take extra subject exams. Year 12 applicants need five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) and must complete a subject paper at AS-Level standard.

3

Interview

Each year group has a student interview. In early years, it’s play-based observation. For Sixth Form, it’s a subject-focused discussion. A parent component is included through primary level. Interviews are conducted online for families not yet resident in China.

4

Year Placement

AISL places students by date of birth, not by prior curriculum level. The cutoff is 1 September.

  • US Grade 6 = Year 7
  • US Grade 8 = Year 9
  • US Grade 11 = Year 12
  • IB MYP and Australian year levels map the same way

SAT scores, MAP results, and ISEE scores play no role in admissions decisions.

5

Know the Timing Rules

  • Direct entry into Year 11 or Year 13 is not permitted at any campus
  • Entry to Year 10 or Year 12 is not permitted after the October half-term
  • Harrow Beijing advises applying one to two years in advance for popular year groups
  • For Year 10 and Year 12 at Shenzhen, applications for September entry close by February of that year

Dulwich College China

Dulwich College is China’s leading IB school network. Dulwich College Beijing is #1 in mainland China and #14 worldwide in the 2025 IB league table. They achieved a 38.7 average and two perfect scores. Dulwich Shanghai Pudong has led the China IB league table for three years in a row. These results are truly outstanding.

No Harrow campus can match them on the IB metric since Harrow doesn’t offer IB. Dulwich’s flagship campuses are IB-only. The exception is Dulwich International High School Suzhou (DHSZ). It’s a pure A-Level school with secondary fees ranging from CNY 259,800 to 278,500 (about USD 36,100 to 38,700).

This is much cheaper than Harrow International. DHSZ has a strong record, boasting a 3-year A*/A average of 39%. Dulwich’s Class of 2025 scored 6 offers from Oxbridge. They also received 17 offers from Ivy League schools, MIT, and Stanford.

Wellington College China

Wellington College China is run by Wellington College Education China. Joy Qiao founded it in 2009. She graduated from Oxford with a computer science degree. She also worked at Intel.

The operating model is a not-for-profit exclusive partnership. It is not a franchise. Wellington College UK has at least 34% of voting membership on each school affairs board. Wellington College International Shanghai offers an IB-only program with a 37.4 IB average for 2025. It boasts two perfect 45s and four years of Oxford placements. Families can pick Wellington, Hangzhou, or Tianjin.

Each school has A-Level programs. A-Level results are very competitive. In 2025, Hangzhou achieved 64% A*/A and Tianjin 63% A*/A. Both beat Harrow Shenzhen’s 61% inaugural cohort result, and both come close to Harrow Shanghai’s 5-year average of 67%. Wellington holds CIS and COBIS accreditations. Wellington Shanghai is the top British school in China for these.

Nord Anglia Education

Nord Anglia Education is the biggest international school group. It has 68 schools. It is the leading provider of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Its China campuses span Beijing Shunyi, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, and Suzhou.

The British School of Guangzhou (BSG, A-Level only) is key for families looking at options before Harrow Guangzhou opens in September 2026. In 2025, BSG had a 62% A*/A rate and a 100% pass rate. Plus, four graduates have been placed at Oxbridge in the last two years. NAIS Shanghai Pudong jumped its IB average from 33 to 37 in 2025 — the most improved Nord Anglia school globally.

Nord Anglia has formal academic partnerships with MIT, Juilliard, and UNICEF.

  • MIT provides annual STEAM challenges designed by its faculty.
  • Juilliard offers a curated music and drama curriculum.
  • UNICEF supports UN SDG projects with student summits at UN headquarters.

These programs are part of the regular curriculum, not just optional extras. BSG fees at CNY 292,000 are significantly below Harrow Shanghai’s range.

Families choose Harrow International for three reasons:

1

Direct UK Institutional Link

Harrow Beijing and Harrow Shanghai are the only schools here with BSO accreditation from the UK Department for Education. This is a 450-year-old UK institution. It has board-level oversight from HISL. Beijing was inspected in April 2025. Shanghai was inspected in April 2024.

2

Deepest Published Oxbridge Placement Record per Campus

  • Seven Oxbridge offers from Harrow Beijing in three years.
  • Five consecutive years of Cambridge offers from Harrow Shanghai.
3

2025 AISL Group Results — Unmatched Transparency

No other competitor networks have shared this level of detail.

  • 1,650 university offers
  • About 20 Oxbridge offers
  • Around 20 Ivy League, MIT, and Stanford offers across the network
  • Six AISL Harrow schools rank in the global Top 100 for IGCSE and A-Level

Opening Now: Harrow Guangzhou (September 2026)

Harrow International School Guangzhou opens in September 2026. It will be the first Harrow International (哈罗国际) school in the city. The campus building completed construction in early 2026; founding faculty are already on-site. Admissions are live.

Location

Huangpu District is in Guangzhou. It is part of the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City. This area is a national science and technology zone. AISL built this campus to help Guangzhou’s tech and research community. It aims to serve corporate expatriate families. This aligns with China’s focus on “new quality productive forces.” AISL Group Chair Dr. Rosanna Wong said the campus is a place. It aims to “cultivate navigators for the era of intelligent innovation.”

Year Groups at Opening

Pre-Nursery through Year 10 only. The school phases up as the founding cohort advances. The planners aim for full capacity at 1,500 places.

Curriculum

Pure British pathway — IGCSE and A-Level — under 哈罗国际 foreign nationals’ registration. Unique facilities include the AISL FutureLab. It focuses on AI, robotics, drone engineering, and CAD. There is also an entrepreneurship center. This center is part of the academic program.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Harrow schools are currently in China?

Eight Harrow campuses are open in mainland China, spread across six cities:

  • Beijing
  • Shanghai
  • Shenzhen (two campuses)
  • Zhuhai/Hengqin
  • Haikou (both a Harrow International and a Harrow Li De track on the same site)
  • Chongqing
  • Nanning

A new campus, Harrow International School Guangzhou, will open in September 2026. Founding admissions are now open.

What are the three types of Harrow School in China?

AISL operates three product lines. Harrow International (哈罗国际) is a school for foreign students offering British IGCSE and A-Level, in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen Qianhai, Haikou, and Guangzhou. Harrow Li De (哈罗礼德) is a bilingual private school mixing the Chinese national curriculum with British teaching, in Hengqin, Haikou LiDe, Chongqing, and Nanning. Harrow HK Children (哈罗港人子弟) caters to Hong Kong families following the DSE curriculum in Shenzhen Qianhai.

Can foreign passport holders attend Harrow International School China?

Yes. All Harrow International (哈罗国际) campuses are open to foreign passport holders of any nationality. One parent must have a valid Chinese work permit and residence permit. In Haikou and Shenzhen Qianhai, at least one parent must have a foreign passport or permanent residence card. Harrow Li De campuses also accept foreign nationals with no passport restrictions.

Do US universities accept A-Levels from Chinese international schools?

Yes. All Ivy League schools accept A-Level qualifications, as do most US universities. You can submit these through the Common Application. Many schools give course credit — Columbia offers 6 credits per A-Level subject (up to 16), and Yale accepts grades A or B for credit. However, most Ivy League schools still require SAT or ACT scores from A-Level students. Columbia and NYU are test-optional; the UC system (Berkeley, UCLA) is test-blind.

Are A-Levels accepted by universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and Hong Kong?

Yes. A-Levels are the primary entry qualification for UK universities via UCAS. All Group of Eight universities in Australia accept them for direct entry — no foundation year is needed. All Canadian U15 universities accept A-Levels without requiring SAT or ACT scores. HKU, HKUST, and CUHK in Hong Kong all accept A-Levels as a direct entry credential. NUS and NTU in Singapore also accept UK A-Levels.

How much does Harrow International School China cost?

For secondary day students in 2025–26:

  • Harrow Beijing: about USD 44,700–48,970 per year
  • Harrow Shanghai: around USD 51,500–55,400
  • Harrow Shenzhen Qianhai: roughly USD 40,300–50,000 (boarding adds about USD 16,700)
  • Harrow Haikou International: approximately USD 35,800–40,300
  • Harrow Li De campuses: approximately USD 26,100–44,000

Guangzhou fees are not yet officially published. All figures come from official fee schedules published by June 2026. Verify with each school before committing.

What is the admissions process for Harrow International School China?

Apply to each campus separately via its OpenApply portal. Required documents include:

  • Passports for applicant and parents
  • Birth certificate
  • China residence permits
  • Two years of school reports
  • Teacher recommendation

Students from Year 2 upward sit the CAT4 cognitive ability test. All year groups include a student interview, available online for families outside China. Year placement is by date of birth. Direct entry to Year 11 and Year 13 is not permitted. Apply at least one to two years in advance for Beijing.

Which is better — Harrow or Dulwich in China?

Both are top British international schools with strong academic results, but they focus on different things. Harrow International offers only A-Level courses. It has a formal link to Harrow School UK (founded 1572) and is accredited by BSO. In 2025, six AISL Harrow schools were in the global Top 100 for GCSE and A-Level results. Harrow Shanghai has had five consecutive years of Cambridge placements.

Dulwich is China’s top IB network. Dulwich Beijing is #1 in mainland China and #14 globally in the 2025 IB League Table, with an average of 38.7. Dulwich Shanghai Pudong has topped the China IB rankings for three years in a row.

Families who prefer A-Level and the British university route typically choose Harrow. Those who prefer the IB pathway often select Dulwich. Only Dulwich International High School Suzhou (DHSZ) offers pure A-Level among Dulwich campuses.

Is Harrow China connected to Harrow School UK?

Yes, through a formal licensing arrangement. Harrow School UK’s trading arm is Harrow International Schools Limited (HISL). It gives AISL a sub-license to use the Harrow name. The agreement is a 30-year master franchise signed in 2022. Harrow UK maintains academic standards through HISL representatives on each campus board, termly governor visits, and independent assessments for every school.

Is Harrow China Right for Your Family?

Choose Harrow International (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Haikou, Guangzhou) if your family has foreign passports. One parent needs a Chinese work and residence permit. If you want a full British A-Level education, we help students get into top schools. This includes Oxbridge and Ivy League.

Think about Harrow Li De in Hengqin, Haikou, Chongqing, or Nanning. This option suits you if you’re open to a bilingual Chinese-British approach and live in one of these cities.

Here are the latest academic results:

  • Nanning’s first A-Level cohort reached 75% A*/A and got into Russell Group and Group of Eight schools.
  • Hengqin’s first IGCSE cohort achieved 79% A*/A.
  • Chongqing’s first cohort secured 67% A*/A.

These schools are ideal for families starting in Year 6 or later, especially if the child has limited Chinese.

Check out Haikou if you want to pick between a full international track and a bilingual Li De track. This option is unique among all Harrow schools in China.

Look at Guangzhou specifically if you are relocating to or already in the Pearl River Delta. A new campus with founding-class incentives and a technology-focused identity. September 2026 places are available now.

If you want the IB Diploma, check out Dulwich, Wellington, or Nord Anglia. You can also consider them if Harrow isn’t in your city.
