Apply as early as possible — ideally six to twelve months before your target entry date. SHSID uses rolling admissions, which means offers are made throughout the year as places become available. Popular grades, especially in high school, fill well before the September semester begins. The school accepts both Fall (September) and Spring (February) entry. There is no single application deadline — but waiting until a few months before your move significantly reduces your chance of getting a place at the grade and campus you want.
SHSID offers merit-based scholarships that can cover up to 50% of tuition fees. The school does not publish detailed eligibility criteria publicly. Scholarship assessment typically happens as part of the admissions process — families are evaluated on academic achievement, extracurricular record and potential contribution to the school community. If a scholarship is important to your decision, raise it explicitly when you submit your application and ask the admissions office about the current availability, criteria, timeline and whether a separate scholarship application is required.
AQA A-level — not Cambridge. SHSID's own website footer lists its accrediting bodies as: International Baccalaureate, College Board (AP), AQA A-level, Cognia and CIS. AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) is one of the UK's three main A-level exam boards alongside Edexcel and Cambridge International. AQA A-levels are fully accepted by UK universities and are functionally equivalent for university admissions purposes — the distinction matters most if a student is comparing syllabuses for specific subjects. Many published guides incorrectly call SHSID's UK pathway "Cambridge A-level." The correct name is AQA A-level.
SHSID fields 12 competitive sports teams: soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming, cheerleading, track and field, darts, lacrosse and flag football. Beyond athletics, the school lists over 40 student clubs on its Club Exhibition page, including Model United Nations, VEX Robotics, AMC Club, Chinese Debate Club, Peking Opera Club, Biology Workshop, Symposiums Club, World Scholar's Cup, Future Problem Solving Club, Mock Trial Club, SHSID Gazette (student newspaper), Smile Charity, and Village Radio — among many others. The breadth of the club list reflects a genuine student-run community across academic, cultural, creative and community service areas.
All three are premium Shanghai international schools with strong university outcomes, but they differ in important ways. SHSID is the only one offering IB, AP and AQA A-level under one roof — YK Pao is IB-only and Nord Anglia offers IB alongside Cambridge. SHSID's fees sit at RMB 156,000/year for high school, broadly comparable to YK Pao and lower than Nord Anglia (typically RMB 250,000–290,000). SHSID's institutional heritage is uniquely Chinese — it is the international division of a Chinese public school founded in 1865 — which gives it a different cultural environment from both YK Pao and Nord Anglia, which operate as independent international schools. Families targeting UK universities often prefer AQA A-level; those targeting US universities often prefer AP; those wanting maximum global flexibility choose IB. SHSID is the only school in Shanghai where a family can make that choice after enrolment rather than before.
