Introduction

Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS) started in 1998. Chinese educators founded it. That made it China's first bilingual school brand started by locals. Today, BIBS runs over 20 campuses across China. You'll find campuses in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Kunming, and Weihai.

BIBS has one core idea: students should feel at home in both Chinese and Western cultures. The school blends China's national curriculum with world-renowned programs. These include the IB PYP, IB MYP, and IB DP. Students receive full bilingual learning from age two through Grade 12.

Many parents moving to China ask the same things: Which school fits my child? Which campus is best? What does tuition cost? This guide provides clear answers to all questions.

Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS) Overview

BIBS stands for strong bilingual learning in China. The school motto is "Embrace the essence of East-West integration and appreciate the beauty of cultural fusion." You'll see this in how every campus runs daily.

Class sizes are small. Most campuses cap classes at 22 students. The teacher-student ratio is about 1:5. Your child gets direct, personal attention.

Chinese teachers make up about two-thirds of all staff. The rest come from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. All teachers hold valid credentials. Many have taught for 10 or more years. At the Shunyi campus, 64% of teachers hold master's or doctoral degrees.

Most campuses are IB World Schools. Several also hold WASC accreditation. People know WASC diplomas worldwide, including in the US. Some campuses are also SAT and TOEFL test centers.

What makes BIBS stand out? Two things. First, the Chinese language and math follow the national curriculum. Second, bilingual teaching starts in kindergarten. English isn't added on top. Both languages run side by side from the start.

BIBS gives families real choice. The options depend on the campus and grade. Most campuses offer more than one path.

IB Programs

The IB runs across three stages

  • IB PYP covers early childhood through Grade 5. Learning is inquiry-based. Students build critical thinking skills from a young age
  • IB MYP covers Grades 6 to 10. Students study eight subject groups. They also complete a personal project in their final MYP year.
  • IB DP covers grades 11 and 12. Top universities worldwide accept this diploma.

Other Pathways

Some campuses offer more:

Teaching Approach

The teaching approach at BIBS is inquiry-based. Students ask questions and run projects. They apply what they learn to real tasks. This follows the principles of IB methods.

Language of instruction shifts by grade. In kindergarten, Chinese and English each get about 50% of the time. By high school, around 80 to 85% of classes are in English. Chinese language study runs all the way through.

Chinese teachers lead language arts, math, and cultural subjects. Foreign teachers lead English-medium and IB classes. Both groups work side by side.

Extracurricular Activities

Life outside class matters at BIBS. The Shunyi campus alone offers over 100 extracurricular activities. These cover sports, arts, tech, and academics.

Sports teams compete in regional leagues. Students can also train in equestrian, fencing, sailing, golf, and ice hockey. The Haidian Academy has an on-campus golf course.

Arts options include a dance and theater studio, music room, and school orchestra. Tech clubs cover coding and robotics. The Kunming campus runs over 80 student clubs. Chengdu offers more than 60 interest courses.

Support for New Students

New to China? BIBS has support for expat families. Students who need English help get EAL support. International students get Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) classes. CSL has four levels—from basic daily Chinese up to near-native use.

Buddy programs pair new students with Chinese peers. Orientation programs help families settle in. Parent events run all year.

Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS) Admissions

BIBS takes students from age 2 to 18. There are no nationality limits. Most campuses run rolling admissions all year.

The process includes a written math and English test plus an interview. Some campuses test Chinese too. Beijing residents may need housing documents. Non-Beijing students may need a four-certificate review.

University Placement Outcomes for BIBS Graduates

BIBS has a strong record. University counseling starts in Grade 10. At some campuses, students get personal profiles from Grade 8.

At the Shunyi campus, over 95% of students got offers from the top 50 world universities. Each graduate averaged 8 offers.

For the US, over 90% of students entered top 50 US schools. Schools include UCLA, USC, University of Michigan, NYU, Cornell, and Brown. One student received a full Cornell scholarship worth about 2 million RMB.

For the UK, 75% of graduates entered QS top 100 schools. Offers came from Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Edinburgh, and King's College London.

Chengdu's 2025 graduates achieved a full sweep of the UK's G5 universities. All entered QS top 100 schools. The Haidian Academy's 2025 graduates received offers from Vanderbilt, NYU, Brown, and UCLA.

Conclusion

BIBS is a strong option for expat families in China. The school group covers many campuses, programs, and grade levels. Classes are small. Teachers are well qualified. University results are strong across all main campuses.

You get real curriculum choice.
