History and Milestones

Shenzhen American International School (SAIS) has a deep history in the region. It was founded in 1981.

Originally, it was a satellite campus of the famous Hong Kong International School (HKIS). Its goal was to serve families of foreign nationals working in China. In 1992, the school became independent. It was one of the first international schools in Shenzhen to receive official accreditation.

Over the years, SAIS has achieved major milestones in educational excellence. In 2010, it earned accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). In 2015, it introduced Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

By 2020, it launched the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Today, it operates as a non-profit private school. It relies on tuition and donations to fund its mission. It focuses on holistic development and practical innovation for every student.

Campuses and Facilities

SAIS operates distinct campuses in Shenzhen's core districts. The Shekou Campus is in Nanshan District, near Sea World. It serves grades K-12. This campus is famous for its "MakerSAIS" space. It is equipped with 3D printers and VR tools.

Curriculum and Academic Programs

The school follows a rigorous American-style educational framework. It integrates the US Common Core standards with the IB framework.

  • Kindergarten: The focus is on inquiry-based learning. Students start bilingual language classes here.
  • Primary: The school uses Singapore Math. This method builds a deep understanding of numbers. Students also engage in "Little Scientist" experiments.
  • High School: Students have a dual-track choice. They can take AP courses or the IB Diploma.

A key feature is Project-Based Learning (PBL). Students do not just memorize facts. They apply knowledge to solve real-world problems. This approach fosters critical thinking and creativity.

Additionally, the school follows the Chinese National Curriculum for Mandarin classes. This ensures all students develop strong Chinese language skills alongside their English studies.

Student Body and Diversity

The student body at SAIS is highly international. In the 2023-2024 academic year, the school enrolled about 1,200 students. These students come from all over the world. The largest groups come from the United States, Canada, South Korea, and Hong Kong. About 5% of the students are children of diplomats or senior executives.

This mix creates a "small United Nations" atmosphere. Parents often call it a truly inclusive community. No single culture dominates the school. This diversity is a major strength. It helps students learn to respect different viewpoints.

In the classroom, students share their unique cultural traditions. This daily interaction builds global awareness and empathy. It prepares students to live and work in a connected world.

School Type and Logistics

SAIS is primarily a full-day school. Most students commute daily. The Shekou Campus is strictly a day school. Students arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon.

To make this easy, the school provides a comprehensive school bus service. The routes cover major residential areas in Nanshan, Futian, and Luohu.

However, the new Bao'an Campus offers more options. It provides an Elite Boarding Program for students in Grade 6 and above. This is great for families who live far away. The boarding facility is comfortable and safe. It offers double and quadruple rooms.
