Beijing Shichahai Sports School History and Honours
Beijing Shichahai Sports School opened in 1958. Its first name was the Beijing Shichahai Youth Amateur Sports School. The school went through several changes over the years. It took its current name in 1986. It sits at No. 57 Di'anmen West Street, Xicheng District, Beijing.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports runs the school. The school holds two top national titles:
- National Key Secondary Vocational School
- National High-Level Sports Reserve Talent Base
The school also runs the Beijing Wushu Management Centre. This gives it full authority over martial arts development in Beijing.
The results are hard to argue with. As of August 2023, the school has produced 53 world champions. Eleven of those athletes won 20 Olympic gold medals between them. Zhang Yining alone won four Olympic gold medals in table tennis. Jet Li, a famous movie actor and Wu Jing are two of the school's most famous wushu alumni.
The school has welcomed global sports icons too. French table tennis star Jean-Philippe Gatien and boxing legend Evander Holyfield have both visited the campus. These visits show how the world views this school.
In September 2024, the Beijing Municipal Committee and the Beijing Municipal Government gave the school a merit commendation. This honor recognized its work in growing sports in China and beyond.
Academic and Training Programs at Beijing Shichahai Sports School
The school runs a simple dual-track model. Students study in the morning and train in the afternoon. This keeps both education and sport as equal priorities.
Academic Curriculum
The school holds registration as Beijing No. 100 Middle School. It follows the Chinese national curriculum (CNC) for middle school and vocational students. Core subjects are Chinese, maths, English, physics, chemistry, and history. Morning classes use multimedia labs and science rooms.
Sports Training Programmes
For its 2026 intake, the school trains athletes in six programmes:
- Wushu Routines (Martial Arts Forms)
- Badminton
- Taekwondo
- Boxing
- Fencing
- Golf (new in 2026)
The school added sailing and windsurfing in 2024. That program is still growing. It is not open for enrollment yet.

Training Structure
The school uses a three-tier system to build youth reserve talents for China's sports industry and competitions:
- Beijing Municipal Professional Teams — elite athletes ready to compete (ages 16–30)
- Secondary Sports Classes — middle school and vocational students in active development (ages 12–18)
- Youth Amateur Training — young beginners learning the basics (ages 6–12)
The school uses a "three-centralised" model. Athletes live, study, and train on campus together. There is no commute. This keeps every athlete focused and on schedule.
The school has an on-site science lab for athletes. Doctors and sports scientists use it to test and measure each student. They check body shape, heart and lung fitness, mental performance under pressure, and bone age. The results tell coaches exactly how hard to push each child. They also show whether a child is on the right track for elite sport. This means training here is not guesswork. Every plan is built on data.

Opportunities and Holistic Development for Young Athletes

Sports Career Paths
The school feeds into Beijing's top sports teams. Strong graduates can join one of seven Beijing Municipal Professional Teams. These cover taekwondo, boxing, badminton, wushu, sanda, golf, and fencing. Top athletes go on to compete in the National Games and at the Olympic Games.
After Graduation: What Most International Students Do
Most long-term international students follow one of three paths after finishing high school here:
- Stay in China — apply to a top sports university in Beijing, Shanghai, or another Tier-1 city in China
- Return home — go back to their home country to continue training at a higher level
- Go to the USA — apply to an American university, where their athletic record can open doors to sports scholarships and college programs
The path depends on the student's sport, level, and personal goals. But the good news is that finishing at Shichahai gives your child real options. The training record and competition history they build here carry weight — whether they stay in China or take their skills abroad.

Education and university pathways
International high school sports graduates can apply to Chinese sports universities through the national athlete admission system. To apply, students need three things:
- A vocational high school diploma from the school
- HSK 5 results (Chinese language proficiency test)
- A sports competition portfolio showing their results and achievements
Beijing Sport University is the top international option. Foreign students can also use their Shichahai record to apply for overseas university programmes or sports scholarships.
Industry Partnerships
In December 2025, the school signed a deal with Li-Ning Group. Li-Ning is one of China's biggest sports brands. The deal covers youth events and training programmes in football, basketball, and volleyball. This shows the school's growing role in the wider sports industry.

Personal Growth
Life at the school builds more than sporting skills. Students learn discipline, resilience, and how to live on their own. They push through hard training. They manage their own time. These habits stay with them for life.
Foreign students get a deep cultural experience too. Living in central Beijing speeds up Mandarin learning. Students form bonds with Chinese elite athletes. The school sits near the historic Shichahai lakes. This gives students access to one of Beijing's most lively cultural areas.
