Introduction
Shenzhen Middle School (深圳中学, "SMS") runs one of the strongest overseas-university programmes of any Chinese public school, at a price almost no one outside China believes. Its International Department (深中国际部) held authorisation for 26 Advanced Placement subjects in the 2025–26 audit year, and tuition is RMB 1,131 per semester — the ordinary rate for a Shenzhen provincial-grade public high school, confirmed on the municipal government's own record in June 2026.
The catch is entry. Every route runs through the Shenzhen zhongkao, the municipal Grade 9 school-entrance examination, and the qualifying conditions are about where a family has lived, not what passport it holds. A foreign-national family settled in Shenzhen for years may qualify. A family arriving from abroad cannot.
This guide answers the question most enquiries actually turn on: who is eligible, what it costs, what is taught, and whether a foreign-passport child can apply at all. Every figure below is labelled with its confidence state and its source. The primary documents are the school's 2026 Class-1 Independent Admissions Notice (深圳中学2026年一类自主招生简章, dated 2026-06-10), its published assessment requirements, its 2026 departmental budget, the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau's 2026 admissions and registration notices, and the College Board's AP Course Ledger.
Admissions and eligibility: who can actually apply
SMS admits International Curriculum students through Shenzhen's Class-1 independent admissions route (一类自主招生). This is a municipal process, not a school-run application, and it sits on top of the zhongkao — the Shenzhen Grade 9 school-entrance examination.

The school's notice names those categories without defining them. The Municipal Education Bureau's 2026 admissions documents define them in combined form:

Two categories that do not exist: there is no Category B and no Category E in the Bureau's current documents, despite both appearing on third-party admissions sites. The "Category B equals blue-stamp household registration" explanation still in circulation refers to a scheme that no longer operates.
The A and C categories are not separately defined in the 2026 documents — the Bureau defines them only as the combined AC group. What determines whether a non-Shenzhen-household child qualifies at all is the five-condition test set out further down this page. The route most International Department students actually take
The 10 independent-admissions places are not the only way in, and possibly not the main one. An article on international education published in the school's own news section in February 2025 describes the department's intake as follows:
深中国际部不直接对外进行招生，而是从考入深中的学生中，根据自愿原则选择进入国际部就读，按照普高标准缴纳学费。深中国际部学生可以在普高和国际部之间流动。
"The SMS International Department does not recruit externally. Rather, from among students admitted to SMS, students choose to enter the International Department on a voluntary basis, and pay tuition at the ordinary senior high standard. SMS International Department students can move between the general track and the International Department."
Publicly reported Published in the 深中新闻 section of the school's website, 2025-02-11 · source. This is a signed commentary by an external observer of the international-education sector, republished by the school, not a school policy document. Alifa labels it Publicly reported for that reason and did not find a school policy statement confirming it.
The school's own account states the same mechanism, and adds a step the commentary omits:
每年按深圳市中招政策录取学生。学生在被深圳中学高中部录取后，进行英语分层考试，选择国际部后就读。
"Students are admitted each year according to Shenzhen's municipal senior secondary admissions policy. After being admitted to the Shenzhen Middle School senior high division, students sit an English streaming examination, and then choose to study in the International Department."

So there is an English streaming examination after admission, not a simple opt-in. That is a second selection point, and Alifa found no published information on what it tests or whether it can exclude a student who wants the International Department. Not currently confirmed
If that description holds, the practical position is that a student first has to be admitted to Shenzhen Middle School by any route, sits the English streaming examination, and then enters the International Department — with movement in both directions afterwards. That is a materially different proposition from a 10-place external intake, and it is the single thing Alifa would put first on a call with the school's admissions office. The two accounts are not contradictory: the International Curriculum stream is a dedicated zhongkao pathway with its own assessment, while the opt-in route draws from the school's whole intake. Where the 534 figure comes from: the control line is published by the school, not the Bureau. The Bureau's approval document confirms only that each school sets and publishes its own control line, that the line applies solely within the independent-admissions batch, and that it is unrelated to the school's first-batch cutoff. Do not read 534 as a general entry threshold.
What gets an application looked at
For the International Curriculum stream, a candidate needs any one of the following, with evidence:
- An award in an English writing, debate or public-speaking competition during junior high.
- An English international test score from junior high — the notice names TOEFL (including TOEFL Junior), IELTS, PSAT, FCE and Duolingo.
- A provincial-level or higher science-competition award from junior high.

The assessment itself is a written paper in mathematics and English. The English component tests critical reading, information analysis and synthesis, logical reasoning, grammar and register, and rhetorical and genre recognition. International Curriculum is the second-smallest stream in the entire Class-1 intake. Alifa Education notes this because international-school directories routinely present the SMS International Department as a large programme; the school's own 2026 notice puts new International Curriculum intake at 10 students.
Does SMS accept foreign students?
Yes in principle. Almost never in practice — and the reason is residence history, not nationality.
Shenzhen's municipal rules expressly allow the children of foreign nationals working and living in the city to register for the zhongkao. But the qualifying conditions require a family to have been settled in Shenzhen for years before the child reaches Grade 9, including three complete years of Shenzhen junior high schooling. A family arriving from abroad cannot construct that history retrospectively.
What the municipal rule actually says
The governing instrument is the Measures for the Administration of Senior Secondary School Examination and Admission Work for Children Accompanying Non-Shenzhen-Household Employed Persons after Compulsory Education (深圳市非深户籍就业人员随迁子女接受义务教育后参加高中阶段学校考试招生工作管理办法), issued by the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, effective 2022-01-01 for a five-year term. Its Article 10 provides:
在我市工作生活的港澳居民、台胞及外籍人士，其非深户籍子女在我市报名参加中考，参照本办法规定办理。
"For Hong Kong and Macao residents, Taiwan compatriots and foreign nationals working and living in this city, their non-Shenzhen-household children register for the zhongkao in this city in accordance with the provisions of these Measures."

So nationality is not the gate. Registration eligibility is drawn on household registration and parental residence, and a foreign-national family is routed through the same conditions as any non-Shenzhen-household family — which places the child in the D category.
The Five Conditions That Actually Decide It
To qualify for cutoff-line admission (划线录取) as a non-Shenzhen-household candidate, all five of the following conditions must be met.
THE CANDIDATE MUST MEET ALL FIVE CONDITIONS
The candidate's father or mother has lawful stable employment in Shenzhen.
The candidate's father or mother has lawful stable accommodation in Shenzhen.
The candidate's father or mother holds a valid Shenzhen residence permit (居住证 — the municipal residence registration document for non-hukou residents).
The candidate's father or mother pays basic pension insurance and basic medical insurance in Shenzhen, with at least one of the two accumulating three years of contributions, counted to 2026-08-31. Back-paid contributions are not counted.
The candidate has three complete years of junior high school records (学籍) in Shenzhen.
A candidate who sits the Shenzhen zhongkao without meeting these conditions is limited to supplementary admission at private senior high schools, or registration-based entry to vocational secondary schools. Condition 5 is the one that closes this school to internationally mobile families. A child must already have completed Grades 7, 8 and 9 inside the Shenzhen system. Alifa Education states this plainly because the widely repeated claim that Chinese public-school international departments are "closed to foreign passports" is the wrong diagnosis: the barrier at Shenzhen Middle School is a three-year local schooling record, and a foreign-national family that has genuinely lived in Shenzhen since the child was eleven or twelve may well clear it.
Where the school's own paperwork creates friction
One tension is worth raising with the school directly. The municipal registration rules admit foreign nationals through the D-category route, but Shenzhen Middle School's own published assessment requirements state that candidates enter the examination venue with their admission ticket and a valid resident identity card (有效居民身份证) — the PRC national identity document, which a foreign passport holder does not hold. Alifa is not going to read that as the school excluding foreign nationals. The ordinary explanation for boilerplate of this kind is that it was written for the overwhelming majority of candidates, and the municipal registration materials list separately accepts other identity documents. But it is unresolved on the published record, and a foreign-passport family that clears the five conditions should ask the school in writing which document it will accept at the assessment before committing to the process. The Hong Kong and Macao stream is not an international stream
SMS does run a stream open to non-mainland identity holders — the Hong Kong and Macao Curriculum (港澳课程), 40 places in 2026. Eligibility is a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan residence permit (港澳台居民居住证) or a mainland travel permit (港澳台往来内地/大陆通行证). Foreign passports are not listed. More to the point, this stream points in the opposite direction from the International Curriculum stream. The school's own assessment document states that Hong Kong and Macao Curriculum students are prepared for the Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students (港澳台联考) — the route into mainland Chinese universities. Why families confuse these two
Both streams read as "international" in English. They are not interchangeable. Hong Kong and Macao Curriculum is a mainland-university preparation track for holders of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan identity documents. International Curriculum is an overseas-university track for mainland Shenzhen students. Neither is open to a foreign-passport applicant.
The Regulatory Chain, and the Register Nobody Publishes
Be precise about what "authorisation" means here. The national rule hands this decision to the province, the province abolished school-level approval in 2008, and nothing was published in its place.
What the rules actually sayNational — MOE Order No. 42, effective 2017-07-01. Article 2 hands the admission of international students at pre-school, primary and secondary schools to provincial rules. Article 48 repealed the 1999 Interim Measures that many directories still cite as current. Confirmed
Provincial — Guangdong has issued nothing since. The operative basis is a 2008 opinion, 粤教外〔2008〕34号, which abolished school-level approval in March 2008 and replaced it with registration at municipal level. There is therefore no provincial list to appear on. Publicly reported
No public register exists. Alifa found no provincial or Shenzhen list. Control schools known to hold foreign-national licences — Shekou International and Shenzhen BASIS — were equally absent, so the search proves nothing about any school. We make no claim in either direction about Shenzhen Middle School. Not currently confirmed
Shenzhen does publish a procedure. 深教规〔2009〕1号 requires that the school hold the qualification to accept foreign students, that the school agrees, and that the district education bureau agrees. Two cautions: its legal basis includes the repealed 1999 Measures, and no current service guide appears on the provincial portal. Confirmed
One district has stated a position. Pingshan District says public schools in principle do not accept foreign students, directing families to private or Hong Kong children's schools. That is a district administrative position, not municipal policy — and Pingshan is not Luohu. Publicly reported

Fees and real cost
This is where SMS is genuinely unusual. The International Department is a department of a public school and pays public-school rates. Alifa confirmed the current figures against two live government sources, not the school's own nine-year-old notice.
Shenzhen sets public senior high tuition by school grade. The municipal Development and Reform Commission publishes the scale: ordinary schools RMB 905 per semester, district-grade RMB 996, municipal-grade RMB 1,041, and provincial-grade RMB 1,131, with boarding at RMB 450 per semester. Tuition, boarding and book fees: Shenzhen Municipal Government school record, 2026-06-25 · source. Year-one cost, derived
Two semesters of tuition at RMB 1,131 gives RMB 2,262 for the year. Adding two semesters of boarding at RMB 450 gives RMB 3,162 for a boarder. Uniform, medical examination, military-training food and the campus card are charged but not priced on any current notice, so a realistic year-one range is RMB 2,300 to 4,000 for a day student and RMB 3,200 to 5,000 for a boarder. The estimate excludes everything an overseas-university applicant actually spends beyond school charges — AP examination entry fees, standardised test registrations, application fees and travel are not school charges and appear in no school notice.
The budget corroborates the low fee
The school's 2026 departmental budget records operating revenue (事业收入) of RMB 0.00, with RMB 17.28 million in fiscal special-account managed funds and RMB 24.835 million in other unit funds, against RMB 477.38 million in fiscal appropriation. Alifa Education verified this against the school's own budget filing rather than repeating the annual tuition figures circulating on third-party school directories, which range from "RMB 1,131 per semester" to "just over RMB 2,000 a year" without citing a document.
Curriculum and exit pathway
The structural point families miss: at SMS the international courses are an elective layer on top of the Chinese national curriculum, not a replacement for it.
The school's curriculum page divides all provision into two classes. Basic academic courses (基础学术课程) are the national compulsory and elective-compulsory subjects required for the gaokao and the academic proficiency examinations. School-based courses (深中校本课程) extend and deepen these. Within the school-based tier, some courses are restricted by cohort, and the page states plainly: "international courses are offered only to International Department students" (国际课程仅向国际部学生开设), alongside competition courses for the Olympiad classes, Hong Kong and Macao courses for that class, and mathematics-talent courses for that class. The International Department is also a formal internal unit, not a marketing label. Exit Qualification
SMS is a public Chinese senior high school, so students sit inside the national schooling and graduation framework and take the international courses as electives on top of it.
What the school does not publish is the exit: no document states what diploma or transcript International Department students receive, or how AP and A-Level results are reported alongside the Chinese senior secondary graduation certificate. Ask for this in writing before committing. Not currently confirmed

Cambridge: IGCSE and A-Level are offered
The school states that in June 2020 it passed assessment by Cambridge Assessment International Education, and that on 2020-07-06 Cambridge's UK head office issued a registration certificate confirming Shenzhen Middle School as a Cambridge school qualified to deliver official IGCSE and A-Level courses. Under Part A14 this is a curriculum affiliation and a school registration reported by the school, not a mark Alifa has verified on the awarding body's register. Cambridge's school finder is a client-rendered tool with no reachable data endpoint, so the check goes on Alifa's manual-capture list rather than being asserted here. A Cambridge centre number for this school circulates online; Alifa traced it to no primary source and does not publish it. Not currently confirmed
Oxford AQA and Pearson Edexcel are listed as examination boards for this school by third-party directories. Alifa found no school statement and checked no register for either, and makes no claim in either direction. Absence of a verification is not evidence of absence. Not currently confirmed
The AP authorisation record, subject by subject
Shenzhen Middle School appears on the College Board AP Course Ledger under school code 694324, at 1068 West Nigang Road, Luohu District, Shenzhen 518001. That code is the cheapest way for a family to check they are looking at the right school. Confirmed

Authorised is not the same as timetabled
The ledger records what a school may offer. What Shenzhen Middle School actually ran is a shorter list. An earlier school post put the count at 20 AP courses as at July 2020, and added that pass rates in every AP subject over the preceding five years exceeded the global rate by more than 20 percentage points. So the gap between 26 authorised and roughly 19 to 20 taught is real, and it is the reason a family should ask for the current timetable rather than the subject list. Note also that Calculus AB and Precalculus, both authorised from 2023–24, do not appear on the school's published list, and Macroeconomics does appear on it while having since lapsed from authorisation. Names this school has used, and names it has not
The International Department has been called several things in the school's own archive. Between roughly 2011 and 2015 the school's notices refer to the International Curriculum System (国际课程体系) and an International Curriculum Office (国际课程处). Current documents use International Department (国际部). The admissions stream is named International Curriculum (国际课程). All four refer to the same provision. The International Department has no channel of its own
Shenzhen Middle School runs several verified official WeChat accounts — the main school account (szzxgfwx, verified entity 深圳中学, public institution), a junior high division account, and an alumni association account. None of them belongs to the International Department. Alifa found no independent official account for the International Department, the former International Curriculum System, or the school's university guidance centre. Department news, course information and admissions results are published on the main school account. This is worth stating because it explains the information environment around this school. When Alifa searched for International Department material, every result carrying that name came from a third-party admissions consultancy, a rankings business or a parent group — fourteen such accounts, none of them the school. A family reading about the SMS International Department is almost certainly reading a commercial intermediary, not the school. That is the gap this guide exists to close.
Boarding and non-resident parents
Boarding exists. Student dormitories operate at the Nigang campus: the school ran a public tender for a dormitory laundry refurbishment with a budget of RMB 653,734.73, awarded on 2026-07-22, and the 2017 fee notice prices senior high boarding at RMB 450 per semester. What Alifa could not find is the policy that decides who gets a bed: whether boarding is open to all senior high students, allocated by home distance, or restricted by year group. If the parents do not live in Shenzhen
SMS publishes no guardianship policy of its own — no local-guardian requirement, no documentation list, no emergency-contact rule. Not currently confirmed
Shenzhen's municipal authorities do publish requirements, and they differ sharply depending on the child's nationality.
For foreign and Taiwan students
Where a foreign student's parents do not reside permanently in Shenzhen, the municipal education procedure requires the parents to formally entrust a foreign national or Chinese citizen permanently resident in Shenzhen to perform guardianship duties. The entrustment document must be notarised by a Chinese notary office, or notarised and authenticated by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad. The entrusted guardian must also produce a valid passport and residence permit or identity card — a Shenzhen residence permit if they do not hold local household registration — plus proof of employment in Shenzhen and the employer's business licence or organisation code. The Shenzhen Public Security Bureau states the parallel immigration requirement more recently. Where a minor foreign child has no guardian in Shenzhen, a notarised entrustment is required, comprising: a power of attorney from the parents authenticated by a Chinese embassy or consulate, specifying the entrusted guardian and the guardianship term; a notarised undertaking from the entrusted person accepting responsibility and guaranteeing timely visa extension or departure; and the guardian's identity documents — Shenzhen residents provide identity card and household register, non-local residents provide identity card and Shenzhen residence permit, and other overseas persons provide identity documents plus proof of at least six months' residence in Shenzhen. For mainland-household students
There is no equivalent entrusted-guardian route. Shenzhen's compulsory-education admission policy requires a parent to hold the residence permit and meet the residence and social-insurance conditions personally. Another legal guardian may apply only where the parents have died or lack capacity to act as guardians, and that guardian must satisfy the same conditions. Alifa found no Shenzhen or Luohu District rule creating a pathway for a mainland-household child whose parents simply live in another city. 深圳市非深户籍人员子女接受义务教育管理办法, Shenzhen Municipal Government. Alifa checked the Municipal Education Bureau, Luohu District Education Bureau, the Municipal Government Gazette and the Guangdong government services portal.
For this school, the question largely answers itself either way. Eligibility requires the applicant to be a current Grade 9 graduate of a Shenzhen junior high school with three complete years of Shenzhen schooling records, and for non-household candidates, a parent already holding a Shenzhen residence permit with three years of social insurance. A family whose parents do not live in Shenzhen cannot reach the starting line, whatever the guardianship rules permit.
On boarding specifically, Alifa found no municipal or district requirement for a local guardian or an additional emergency contact for boarders at public senior high schools. Boarding administration appears to sit with the school. Not currently confirmed

Nigang station is the nearer of the two, at roughly 0.5 km from the campus against roughly 1.0 km for Hongling North. Estimated Derived from OpenStreetMap geocoded coordinates for the campus and both stations, straight-line distance, calculated 2026-08-28. Not a walking route and not a walking time.
Alifa does not publish walking or transit times for this campus. The routing measurements available on this pass returned durations that were plainly wrong, and an undated or unreliable travel time is worse than none.

Read these numbers carefully
These are offers or admissions accumulated over about ten years, not one graduating class. They count admissions, not enrolments — one student with four top-30 offers contributes four. Without a per-year denominator they cannot be converted into a placement rate, and a reader cannot compare them with a school that reports one year at a time.
The one year the school did publish a denominator
Alifa found a full 2021 admissions report on the school's official WeChat account. It is five years old, and it is the only cohort for which the school has published the numbers a placement rate actually requires.

Two things in that table matter more than the headline numbers.
The percentages are calculated on applicants, not on the cohort. "95.3% into the US top 50" is 82 of the 86 students who applied to US universities, not 82 of the 95 students in the year group. On the cohort of 95 the same result is 86.3%. Both are strong; they are not the same claim, and the second is the one a parent comparing schools actually needs. Alifa Education states the denominator alongside every rate for exactly this reason.
The school's own two posts do not agree. Three months apart, the top-10 count moves from 12 students to 11, the top-50 count from 82 to 83, and the figure 95 shifts from describing the cohort to being labelled the number of applicants. Alifa is not going to characterise that as overstatement — the April post is explicitly an interim count "as at 20 April" while offers were still arriving, and re-counting between an interim and a final report is ordinary. No cohort figures published since 2021
Alifa searched the school's official WeChat account for 2024, 2025 and 2026 admissions reports and found none. Cohort sizes, offer totals and institution counts for those three years are unpublished on every channel Alifa treats as citable. Not currently confirmed
Cohort figures for those years are circulating — Alifa saw 64, 95 and 136 graduates attributed to 2024, 2025 and 2026 on aggregator sites and admissions-consultancy accounts. None traces to the school. We are not publishing them, and a family shown those numbers should ask which school document they come from.
Two earlier cumulative sets the school has published, for context: Ivy League 32, US top 30 327 and US top 50 582 across 2017 to 2020; and Oxford and Cambridge 17 with UK G5 63 across 2018 to 2020. The school also publishes a separate and much more specific set of domestic outcomes — 17 students selected for Tsinghua and Peking University special programmes in 2026, second nationally, and Olympiad medal counts by year. - Cambridge registration, July 2020. The school reports passing Cambridge International assessment in June 2020 and receiving its registration certificate on 2020-07-06, adding IGCSE and A-Level alongside AP. The UK track opened from September 2020. School-reported permalink
- No admissions report published since 2021. The school published a detailed 2021 cohort report with denominators and has published none for 2024, 2025 or 2026 on its official account. Not currently confirmed
- AP Seminar authorised for the first time, 2025–26. AP Research is still not authorised, so the AP Capstone Diploma remains out of reach on the current record.
- AP Macroeconomics dropped out of the 2025–26 authorisation after appearing in most years since 2010–11.
- International Department fit-out tendered in July 2026. The school issued a tender for International Department environmental works (深中国际部环创) on 2026-07-09 with a budget of RMB 280,000, and published the award on 2026-07-22. What we could not confirm
- Which route supplies most International Department students. A commentary republished by the school in February 2025 says the department does not recruit externally and that students opt in after being admitted to SMS. The 2026 admissions notice creates a dedicated 10-place International Curriculum stream. Both can be true; their relative weight is not published, and Alifa found no school policy document on the opt-in route.
- Which identity document the school accepts at its assessment from a foreign-national candidate. The school's requirements say a valid resident identity card. The municipal registration rules admit foreign nationals through the D route. Attachment 3 to the registration notice, which lists acceptable documents, is published as a scanned image and Alifa could not retrieve its text.
- Whether SMS holds the municipal registration to accept foreign students. No public register exists at provincial or municipal level, and the control test confirmed the search path is uninformative rather than the school unregistered. We make no claim either way.
- Whether the 2009 municipal procedure for foreign students is still applied as written. Its stated legal basis includes the 1999 Interim Measures, which Order No. 42 repealed in 2017, and no current service guide appears on the Guangdong government services portal.
- Separate verbatim definitions of Categories A and C. The Bureau's 2026 documents define only the combined AC group.
- Exit diploma and transcript arrangements for International Department students.
- Boarding allocation policy — who is eligible for a dormitory place and on what basis. No municipal or district guardian requirement for boarders was found either.
- School transport. No route, cost or statement of non-provision found.
- Enrolment. Neither whole-school nor International Department headcount is published. Nor is any annual graduating cohort size, which is why the ten-year admissions totals cannot be turned into a placement rate.
- IGCSE, A-Level, Cambridge, Oxford AQA and Pearson Edexcel affiliations. Widely listed by directories, checked on no awarding body's register in this pass. We make no claim either way.
- Four unpriced fee items — uniform, medical examination, military-training food and campus card. Charged, but priced on no current notice.
What we resolved since first drafting
- The fee figures are current, not stale. The school's own newest fee notice is dated 2017-10-31, but the municipal government's school record of 2026-06-25 and the Development and Reform Commission's 2024 fee scale both state the same figures, and the authorising instruction 深价联字[2002]37号 remains in force with no repealing document.
- Nationality is not the eligibility gate; residence history is. Article 10 of the municipal migrant-children Measures routes foreign nationals living and working in Shenzhen through the same registration conditions as any non-household family.
- The 1999 Interim Measures are repealed. Order No. 42, Article 48, effective 2017-07-01. Several directories still cite the 1999 rules as current.
Checked but not included
- Shenzhen Senior High School (深圳高级中学 / 深圳市高级中学, College Board code 694603). A different school in Futian District. In English its name is easily read as a variant of "Shenzhen Middle School." This guide does not describe it. Its international division is a particularly live confusion. Shenzhen Senior High School runs an International Curriculum System branded SID (深高国际课程体系), with its own verified WeChat account under the ID cn_sid, registered to the entity 深圳市高级中学 in July 2018, and which states SID was founded in 2009. None of that describes Shenzhen Middle School. Alifa flags it because the two schools' Chinese names differ by two characters, both international divisions date from around 2009, and directory entries for one have visibly absorbed facts from the other.
- Shenzhen Experimental School Senior High School (深圳实验学校高中部, code 694452). A different school in Nanshan District, part of the same group of leading Shenzhen public schools. Not described here.
- Shenzhen Foreign Languages School (深圳外国语学校, code 694325). A different school in Yantian District. Its international division has its own separate admissions rules, which differ from those set out here.
- Shenzhen College of International Education (深国交, code 694523). A private school in Futian District, frequently listed next to SMS in Shenzhen rankings. Different school, different sector, different admissions basis.
- SMS Shenshan School and the SMS-founded partner schools (深中深汕学校, 深中龙岗学校, 深中南山创新学校, 深中坪山创新学校 and others). Separate schools founded or supported by SMS. They do not share the Nigang campus International Department provision and are outside this guide.
- The Hong Kong and Macao Curriculum stream. Reviewed in detail and excluded from the international-pathway analysis, because the school's own assessment document states it prepares students for the Joint Entrance Examination for mainland universities, not for overseas admission.
Confirm directly with the school before paying a deposit
- The current fee schedule, and whether any charge applies to International Department students that is not on the 2017 disclosure notice.
- Your child's Shenzhen zhongkao candidate category, and whether it permits an application to this stream at all.
- Which AP subjects are actually timetabled in the coming year, as against the 26 authorised and the 19 the school last published.
- What the post-admission English streaming examination tests, and whether it can prevent entry to the International Department.
- The cohort size and admissions outcomes for the most recent graduating year, in writing, with the denominator stated.
- Whether AP Research is planned, if the AP Capstone Diploma matters to your child's application.
- Boarding availability and allocation for the year group your child would enter.
- What exit diploma and transcript the International Department issues, and how AP results are reported.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shenzhen Middle School International Department
Can a foreign passport holder study at Shenzhen Middle School International Department?
In principle yes, in practice almost never. Shenzhen's municipal rules let the children of foreign nationals working and living in the city register for the zhongkao, so nationality is not the barrier. But qualifying requires all five conditions to hold, including a parent holding a Shenzhen residence permit with three years of social insurance and the child having three complete years of junior high school records in Shenzhen. A family arriving from abroad cannot satisfy that retrospectively.
How much does Shenzhen Middle School International Department cost?
Tuition is RMB 1,131 per semester and boarding RMB 450 per semester, confirmed on the Shenzhen municipal government's school record updated in June 2026. That is about RMB 2,262 a year for a day student. There is no separate international-programme charge, because the department is part of a public school and charges the standard provincial-grade rate. Uniform, medical examination, military training and the campus card are charged additionally but are not priced on any current notice.
How many AP courses does the school offer?
The College Board ledger shows 26 subjects authorised for 2025-26 under school code 694324. Authorisation is not the same as timetabling: the last list the school published named 19 AP courses actually offered. Ask which subjects will run in the year your child would enter. Note also that AP Seminar was authorised for the first time in 2025-26 while AP Research has never been authorised, so the AP Capstone Diploma cannot currently be completed here.
Does the school offer A-Level as well as AP?
The school reports that it became a registered Cambridge school in July 2020, qualified to deliver IGCSE and A-Level, and that it runs a UK track alongside the US track. Alifa reports this as the school states it. We were unable to check Cambridge's own register, so we make no independent claim about the registration, and we do not publish the centre number that circulates online because it traces to no source.
How do students get into the International Department?
Two published routes, both starting with the Shenzhen zhongkao. Ten places in 2026 were allocated to an International Curriculum stream through the municipal independent-admissions process, with a zhongkao floor of 534 points and a written mathematics and English assessment. Separately, the school describes students who are admitted to its senior high division in the ordinary way sitting an English streaming examination and then choosing the International Department, with movement between tracks possible afterwards.
Is boarding available, and where is the school?
Boarding is available at the Nigang campus, No. 1068 Nigang West Road, Luohu District, Shenzhen, at RMB 450 per semester. Nigang station on Line 9 is the nearest metro station, with Hongling North on Lines 7 and 9 about twice as far. Alifa could not find the policy that decides who is allocated a dormitory place, so confirm availability for your child's year group with the school.

It suits a family already settled in Shenzhen whose child has three full years at a Shenzhen junior high and a strong zhongkao score. On that profile it is the best value in Chinese international education — 26 AP subjects at RMB 1,131 a semester. Nationality is not the barrier; residence history is.
And that history cannot be built backwards. Three years of local school records, a parent's Shenzhen residence permit and three years of social insurance must already exist.
