Built on Results

Hangzhou CJL Sports School started in 1956. They called it the Hangzhou Children's Amateur Sports School. In 1991, Hong Kong businessman Mr. ChenJinglun donated RMB 13.757 million to fund a big expansion. They renamed the school after him. It opened in its current form in 1993.

The campus covers over 87,000 square metres. In 2025, the school began a renovation worth RMB 496 million. New buildings include a training gym, dormitory, cafeteria, and combat sports hall. The project wraps up in 2027.

The school holds National Key Secondary Vocational School status. This is the top ranking for this type of school in China. Since 1999, China's State General Administration of Sport has named it a National High-Level Sports Reserve Talent Base. This covers swimming, volleyball, badminton, basketball, weightlifting, and track and field.

The school is a public institution. The Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Sports runs it. The current principal is Wu Luqi.

Chinese sports officials call it the "Cradle of World Champions." The record backs that up:

  • 11 Olympic champions
  • 76 World Champions
  • 122 Asian champions

Top alumni include:

  • Sun Yang
  • Ye Shiwen
  • Luo Xuejuan
  • Lou Yun (gymnastics vault, 1984 Olympics)
  • Wang Lanshu (gymnastics, 2024 Paris Olympics)
  • Huang Yaqiong (badminton, 2024 Paris Olympics)

How Study and Training Fit Together

The school uses a sports-plus-education model. Students study Chinese, maths, English, science, history, and sports science. Class schedules work around training. Competition trips count as part of the curriculum.

Three Ways to Train

Full Boarding — Students live, study, and train on campus full-time. This suits elite athletes who need full focus.

Partial Boarding — Students train most days but have some flexibility. This works for developing athletes.

After-School Training — Students attend their regular school and come to ChenJinglun for after-school sessions. This is for children aged 5 to 13.

The walk-training model is very important. Around 800 swimmers aged 5 to 13 train this way right now. Both Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen started as walk-training students.

One of the Best in the World

The swimming program at ChenJinglun is one of the best at any school, anywhere. Chinese sports media stated that "Chinese swimming looks to Zhejiang." Zhejiang swimming looks to Hangzhou.

The school holds two key national titles for swimming. It is a national swimming second-tier team and a national swimming high-level reserve talent base. This aligns it with China's national swimming program.

Champions Who Trained Here

Sun Yang is the school's biggest name. He won gold at the 2012 London Olympics in the 400m and 1500m freestyle. He went on to win 12 world championship gold medals. Only Michael Phelps has won more. He set world records in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle. Coach Zhu Ying guided him from the start at ChenJinglun.

Ye Shiwen won two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics. She took the 200m individual medley and the 400m individual medley. She set world records in both events. She was the first teenage swimmer to win that double. She also trained under Zhu Ying at ChenJinglun.

Luo Xuejuan won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the 2004 Athens Olympics. She set a world record of 1:06.64. Her win helped put Chinese breaststroke on the world map.

In total, ChenJinglun swimmers have broken 16 world records and 19 Asian records. No other sports school in the world comes close to that number.

The Coaching Team

The swimming program has four national-level coaches. That is rare for any single school in the world.

Head coach Zhu Ying is a legend in Chinese swimming. She spotted Sun Yang during a routine school visit. She also developed Ye Shiwen. Her method builds a strong aerobic base first. Then she works on stroke technique and mental strength.

Two more coaches from ChenJinglun now lead China's national team. Zhang Yadong is the head coach. He Xinzhong is a key coach. The methods taught at ChenJinglun now shape Chinese swimming at the top level.

How Hard Is the Training?

The commitment is serious. Here is what competitive swimmers do:

  • Two hours in the pool every day
  • Seven days a week
  • Only three rest days per year

That is over 730 hours of pool time each year. Most Western age-group programs offer 400 to 500 hours. Dry-land work, strength sessions, and travel add even more time.

The talent search is also serious. Each year, coaches visit over 200 kindergartens and primary schools in Hangzhou. They assess around 1,000 children. They pick about 400 for a six-week summer trial. During the trial, children train six times a week. Each session runs for 90 minutes. Coaches look at body shape, flexibility, coordination, water comfort, and family support.

Enrollment and Practical Parent Guide

Who Can Apply

The 2025 intake targets about 100 students across all sports. All must come from Zhejiang Province. They must be junior middle school graduates with proven athletic ability.

International families face a real barrier without a Chinese language level like HSK 5. The school serves Chinese nationals with Zhejiang Province household registration. There is no English-language support. All classes and coaching are in Mandarin Chinese.

What Comes After Graduation

Graduates have strong options

  • University entry through athletic recommendations
  • A five-year diploma through the integrated vocational programme

The school's coaching pipeline is proof of what is possible. Two of its former coaches now lead China's national swimming team. Graduates with strong records attract attention from employers. The school's name opens doors at every level of Chinese sport.
