You find a school called a "Korean International School". You assume it teaches in English. For twelve of the fifteen schools in this guide, that is wrong. Twelve schools in mainland China have official approval from Korea's Ministry of Education. This approval is called accreditation. All twelve teach the Korean school programme, and they teach it in Korean. None of them has an English class stream. Eight of them say a child must hold Korean nationality. Three more schools were started by Korean families in China. None of the three has Korean accreditation. Those three are the ones most likely to accept your child. Two of them teach fully in English — one on an American programme, one on the British Cambridge programme. ## Quick answers How many Korean schools are there in mainland China? Twelve have Korean government accreditation. Lists that say thirteen are counting Hong Kong. Korea files Hong Kong under China. Are they international schools? No. All twelve teach the Korean national school programme. Not one has an international or English-language stream. Can a child who is not Korean enrol? At most of them, no. But that is each school's own rule, not Chinese law. Chinese law only stops these schools taking Chinese citizens. What language do they teach in? Korean, at every age. The schools without Korean accreditation teach in English, or in a mix of English, Korean and Chinese. Does my child need to speak Korean? Five schools test Korean before entry. At the others, lessons are in Korean whether there is a test or not. What does a year cost? Where a school prints a yearly fee, between 28,000 and 42,400 RMB. The schools without Korean accreditation cost about twice that. Where do graduates go? Almost all go to universities in Korea, on a special route for Korean children taught abroad. Only the Shenzhen school lists US and UK places. In August 2026 Alifa checked all fifteen schools against the Korean government school register, its 2024 student numbers, Chinese national and city approval lists, the College Board AP register and four school inspection bodies. The first comes from Korea. The Korean Ministry of Education accredits the school as an overseas Korean school. The second comes from China. The school must hold a Chinese licence as a school for the children of foreign nationals. In Chinese this school type is called 外籍人员子女学校. This double test is what matters. All twelve accredited schools hold both approvals. We confirmed each one on a Chinese government list as well as on the Korean register. Some schools appear on lists online but are not accredited. Each of those holds Chinese approval. None holds Korean approval. That is the only side they fail on. Korean accreditation is what makes a school a Korean school in the official sense. For a non-Korean family, it is also a warning sign. An accredited school exists to teach the Korean programme to Korean children living abroad. It changes what you should ask. Chinese rules for 外籍人员子女学校 schools name the students they are for. They are for the children of foreign nationals who hold a residence permit in China. Liaoning province added guidance in 2016\. It allows these schools to take children of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents who work legally in the province. Both the national rules and the Liaoning guidance are clear on one point. These schools may not take the children of Chinese citizens. Neither rule limits a school to one nationality. So when a Korean school in China says it takes only Korean nationals, that is the school's own rule. It is not part of its Chinese licence. The legal limit is wider than the school's published rule. **What to do with this.** A "Korean nationality only" rule is a policy. Policies have exceptions and transfer routes. It is worth one phone call. Ask whether your child could be considered. Ask directly whether the rule is school policy or a licence condition. The answer is usually the first one. One limit works the other way and does not move. If your child holds a Chinese passport, these schools cannot take them. ## The fifteen schools __Twelve Korea-accredited schools, plus three Korean-founded schools without Korean accreditation. The school adds that both parents need a foreign passport, and reports more than 20 nationalities School-reported | **Two different schools in Weihai.** 威海**永仁**韩国外籍人员子女学校 has Korean accreditation and opened in 2018\. 威海**中世**外籍人员子女学校 opened in 2006 and has never had it. They are one Chinese word apart, and they sit on the same street: the accredited school at 42-2 East Jiangsu Road, the other at number 42\. Weihai's own 2025 city service list names both, separately, with different phone numbers. Check which one a listing means before you contact it. ## Who can actually enrol The fifteen schools fall into three groups. The group decides whether your family has a real option. ### Group one: the twelve accredited schools Eight of the twelve say a child must hold Korean nationality. Suzhou asks a child with two nationalities to give up the other one first. Dalian needs a Korean parent at every age. Three schools are partly open. Beijing takes any foreign passport holder in primary school. The child needs a Chinese residence permit, and a place must be free. From middle school Beijing needs a Korean parent. Yanji takes non-Koreans only with a letter from a Korean consulate, and does not accept Chinese citizens of Korean descent. Guangzhou publishes no Korean-only rule, and its Chinese licence covers any foreign nationality. Shenyang publishes no nationality rule at all. We searched its website, the Shenyang and Liaoning education offices, and sources in Korean, Chinese and English. We found nothing from the school itself. Not published Under Liaoning rules the school may take any foreign national. So the missing rule is not a closed door. But lessons are in Korean, and only the school can tell you if it would take your child. ### Group two: Milton International School in Qingdao This school was the Korean International School of Qingdao until January 2020\. It teaches in three languages at once. Main subjects are in English with native-speaker class teachers. Korean school subjects are in Korean. Chinese is taught as well. Its stated entry conditions are a Chinese residence visa and no bar to transfer. No nationality rule and no Korean test appear on its entry pages. School-reported Two things to weigh. We searched every page of its website for an outside school programme standard. There is none — no IB, no AP, no Cambridge, no inspection body, and no link to a named partner school. Its "Western Curriculum" is a name for a group of courses, not a recognised qualification. Also, its whole website is in Korean. Its high school class teachers are Korean. It runs a full set of Korean subjects. A non-Korean family would be joining a Korean school community. The school publishes no list of where its leavers go. Its university news pages need a member login, and the results table on its own WeChat account carries placeholder marks where university names should be. Not published ### Group three: Korean International School of Shenzhen This is the only school here that matches what most families mean by an international school. It is also the best checked school in this guide. It teaches an American programme fully in English, from preschool to grade 12\. Chinese is a second language. Korean is an optional third language. It has students from more than 28 countries and needs no Korean. It is accredited by Cognia, a US school inspection body. It also appears on the College Board's AP register, under the name Korea International School In Shenzhen, with sixteen approved AP courses. These include Calculus BC, Physics C, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science A, Statistics and Psychology. Two honest points. We did not find it in the CIS or NEASC directories, and it is not a member of ACAMIS or EARCOS. Most international schools in China hold one of those memberships. We are not publishing a WASC result either way, because the WASC directory failed our own reliability check. And its claim to run an SAT test centre on campus is the school's own. School-reported One odd detail is worth knowing. Chinese law registers this school as 深圳市韩国外籍人员子女学校 — a Korean school for the children of foreign nationals. China calls it a Korean school. Korea's own register does not list it at all. ### Group three, second school: Weihai Zhongshi International School This school opened in 2006 as 威海中世韩国国际学校, a Korean international school. It changed its Chinese name to 威海中世外籍人员子女学校 in 2018\. Today it calls itself Weihai Zhongshi International School, or WZIS, and also uses WZFS. Its Korean name is 위해중세외국인학교. It is not a Korean-programme school. It teaches in English at every stage, on the British Cambridge programme. That means Cambridge Primary for grades 1 to 5 and Lower Secondary for grades 6 to 8\. Then IGCSE for grades 9 and 10, and A-Levels for grades 11 and 12\. It runs an official SAT test centre and an HSK centre. Entry needs a foreign passport for the student and both parents. The school reports students from more than 20 countries. It offers boarding from grade 6\. School-reported Its published Class of 2026 list is the most mixed on this page. In Korea, leavers went to Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei, Sungkyunkwan, Hanyang and Korea Aerospace. Elsewhere they went to Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, the University of Macau, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, NC State and Arizona State. School-reported Two points to check yourself. The school states that it is accredited by WASC and by ACSI, and that it is a Cambridge school. We could not confirm any of the three on the awarding bodies' own registers in this check, so all three remain the school's own claims. School-reported And the school still keeps Korean phone numbers, a KakaoTalk contact and Korean youth sports teams, so a Korean community remains at its centre. **The pattern worth understanding.** Korean accreditation sounds like a mark of quality. For a Korean family it is one. For a non-Korean family it is closer to the opposite. The schools here most likely to accept your child are the ones that never had it. The numbers below come from its 2024 figures. All are counted on the same day, 1 April 2024\. That makes them easy to compare. The schools' own websites are not. These are small schools. Only Shanghai has more than 800 students. Three have fewer than 210\. Small can mean close attention from teachers. It can also mean few subject choices at high school. Ask which one it means. It also settles the counting question. The same figures list thirteen schools under China. That is because they include the Korean International School of Hong Kong and its 106 students. Twelve schools and 4,774 students are in the mainland. Several schools print different numbers on their own websites. Some carry no date. Some are from other years. Where they differ, use the numbers above, because they all share one date. School-reported The three schools without Korean accreditation are not in these figures, and none of them publishes a student count. Not published Korea International School in Shenzhen (KIS in Shenzhen): Mini Sports Day Full of Energy ## Language and school programme All twelve accredited schools teach the Korean national school programme in Korean. Three of them state the teaching language on a page that carries a date. The other nine state it on pages with no date. School-reported English and Chinese are taught at every school, but as subjects. They are not the language of teaching. Several schools employ native-speaker teachers for those subjects. Shenyang calls its programme trilingual. None of this changes the classroom language for maths, science or social studies. That language is Korean. No accredited school publishes an international stream. Guangzhou runs a combined programme under its own name, with a class that prepares students for the Korean university route. It states clearly that there is no separate international stream. Beijing comes closest. Its 2026 curriculum table lists Advanced Placement electives, and it hosts an official SAT test centre. Both sit inside the Korean curriculum, not as a separate English stream, and we could not match the school to the College Board register. School-reported Five schools test Korean before entry. Beijing tests Korean, English and maths for middle and high school. Wuxi checks spoken Korean in an interview. Qingdao checks Korean at interview. Guangzhou sets a written test in Korean. Suzhou sets an entry exam on the Korean programme. Shanghai and Shenyang publish no Korean requirement, and we found none from any official source. Not published Be careful with what you read elsewhere. Several websites publish detailed entry-test information for Shenyang. Those pages carry no date, no author and no source document, and they contradict each other. We did not use them, and neither should you. Shanghai Korean School: A Campus Tour for Future Students ## Fees: what each school charges, and how often __Fees exactly as each school prints them, in the period each school uses. Older fee figures circulating online belong to the other Weihai school | | | Where a school publishes an annual figure, high school costs 28,000 to 42,400 RMB. That is far below most international schools in the same cities. Access costs more. Milton Qingdao charges 88,000 RMB a year for high school. That is about twice the accredited-school range. Shenzhen charges 72,900 RMB for one semester. So one term there costs close to a full year at Milton. Both figures are for 2026\. Neither includes meals or transport. **Watch the billing period.** Four schools charge by semester or by quarter, not by year. A semester figure looks small next to a yearly one. Ask for the full-year total in writing. **Two schools publish no fees at all.** In Weihai, city rules say schools of this type should display their fees publicly and file them with the authorities. So it is fair to ask a school for its filed fee schedule in writing. Every figure above is copied exactly as the school prints it, in the school's own billing period. Nothing has been converted or turned into a yearly total. Milton International School Qingdao (MISQ): A Powerful Student Speech on the True Meaning of Respect ## Where graduates go Ten of the twelve accredited schools publish university results. The places are almost all in Korea. Leavers enter Korean universities on a special route for Korean children taught abroad. Published lists name Seoul National University, Yonsei, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan, Kyung Hee and Hanyang. This matters for planning. The programme, the language and the entry route all point at Korea. A child at one of these schools is being prepared for Korean university entry. They are not being prepared for the US, the UK or China. Shenzhen is the exception. It publishes overseas university offers for its 2024 and 2026 leavers. Suzhou, Weihai and Milton Qingdao publish no list. ## Names that are not these schools These names appear in search results and on lists online. None of them is one of the fifteen schools above. - **Beijing Korean School (北京大韩学校)** — a real Beijing school. Its licence ended in March 2010\. It is why many lists show two schools in Beijing. - **Qingdao Yuehua Korean School (青岛悦华韩国学校)** and **Cangzhou Zhenhua (沧州振华)** — never accredited. We could not confirm whether they still run. Not published - **Milton School Qingdao (青岛梅尔顿学校)** — a separate A-Level school in Laoshan district, once 青岛二中剑桥国际高中, owned by a Shanghai group. It is often mixed up with Milton International School in Qingdao, which is in Chengyang district. Even the NCUK study-centre list uses a name close enough to confuse. This matters for one reason above all. The Laoshan school's published UK university offers, from Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Manchester and Edinburgh, get attached online to the Chengyang school, which publishes no results at all. They are not the same school. - **Korean International School of Hong Kong** — a real Korean school, but outside mainland China. Korean International School in Beijing: Global Cheer Show ## What Alifa checked Roster and operating status Twelve accredited schools confirmed on the Korean government register, current to September 2026, and in its 2024 student figures. The count of thirteen seen online is the same data with Hong Kong included. Every accredited school carries a notice on its own website dated between June and August 2026\. Weihai Zhongshi shows a Class of 2026 graduation and 2026 competition results on its own site. Accreditation basis Each of the twelve confirmed on the Korean register and on a Chinese government list. The Chinese sources are the national list of 116 approved schools dated 28 March 2017, plus city and provincial pages dated 2021 to 2026\. Shenzhen, Milton Qingdao and Weihai Zhongshi are confirmed absent from the Korean register, each with a control search proving the method worked. Weihai Zhongshi is confirmed on Weihai's 2025 city service list, and on a city government inspection notice published in December 2025. Eligibility Nationality rules taken from each school's own entry pages and quoted in the original language. We then checked them against the national rules for this school type and Liaoning's 2016 provincial guidance. Shenyang publishes no nationality rule and no Korean requirement. Its own website was blocked, and a full search in Korean, Chinese and English found nothing official. Shanghai publishes no Korean requirement. Not published Weihai's 2025 city service list independently records the accredited school as taking Korean nationals, and Weihai Zhongshi as taking foreign nationals generally. School programme and exit route Programme and teaching language taken from each school's published pages. No accredited school runs an international curriculum, and none claims IB or Cambridge. Beijing lists Advanced Placement electives in its 2026 curriculum table and hosts an official SAT test centre; we could not match it to the College Board register. School-reported Shenzhen is confirmed on the College Board AP register with sixteen approved courses, and accredited by Cognia; it was not found in the CIS or NEASC directories, each with a passing control test. Weihai Zhongshi's WASC, ACSI and Cambridge claims could not be confirmed on any awarding body's register. School-reported The WASC directory returned no results for the whole of China when tested, so no WASC finding is published for any school here, positive or negative. Milton Qingdao's website was searched in full for an outside programme standard. There is none. Fees and size Fees copied exactly as each school prints them, in the school's own period and currency. Nothing converted, changed to a yearly figure, or averaged. Yantai and Weihai publish no fees. Beijing's period is confirmed as per semester, from an official fee notice dated 30 December 2025\. Student numbers come from one Korean government dataset counted on one day, 1 April 2024, rather than from thirteen school pages dated 2018 to 2026\. Weihai Zhongshi prints per-semester fees for 2025-26 and is the only school here publishing a boarding fee. Its student count appears only in recruitment listings, so none is published. Not published **Ask the school before you pay a deposit** 1. Will you take a child on our passport, in the year group we need, this year? 2. Is your nationality rule your own policy, or a condition of your Chinese licence? 3. What language will maths and science be taught in, in that class? 4. Is there a Korean test or interview? Is there support for a child who speaks no Korean? 5. What is the total first-year cost, for a full year, including entry fee, meals and transport? 6. What qualification does my child leave with? Which universities accept it? 7. How many students are in that year group? How many subjects can they choose at high school? ## Frequently asked questions from parents ¥Are Korean schools in China cheaper than international schools? Yes, much cheaper. Where a yearly fee is published, the accredited schools charge 28,000 to 42,400 RMB a year for high school. Most international schools in the same cities charge several times that. In return, your child is taught in Korean, on the Korean school programme. ENMy child speaks English but not Korean. Which schools work? Two schools. Korean International School of Shenzhen teaches fully in English, needs no Korean, is accredited by Cognia, and is on the College Board AP register with sixteen courses. Weihai Zhongshi International School teaches fully in English on the Cambridge programme, to IGCSE and A-Level, and offers boarding from grade 6\. Milton International School in Qingdao teaches main subjects in English but runs a Korean subject stream and holds no outside programme accreditation. ?A school says it only takes Korean nationals. Is that final? It is the school's own rule, not a legal one. Chinese rules for these schools say they are for children of foreign nationals with residence permits. They do not limit a school to one nationality. It is worth asking whether your child could be considered. Also ask whether the rule is school policy or a licence condition. CNCan a child with a Chinese passport attend? No. The national rules and the provincial guidance both say these schools may not take the children of Chinese citizens. This is the one limit that cannot change. It applies to all fifteen schools. KRWhy is Korean accreditation a problem for us? Because it sets the school's purpose. An accredited overseas Korean school exists to teach the Korean programme to Korean children abroad. Its entry rules follow from that. WThere are two Korean schools in Weihai. What is the difference? 威海永仁韩国外籍人员子女学校 has Korean accreditation, opened in 2018, and had 294 students in April 2024\. 威海中世外籍人员子女学校, known as WZFS, opened in 2006 and has never had Korean accreditation. The names differ by one word. Check which school a listing means before you contact it. BDo any of these schools offer boarding? One does. Weihai Zhongshi International School offers boarding from grade 6, at 7,000 RMB per semester. Yantai calls itself mainly a day school with bus travel, and lists a dormitory building as part built. No other school on this page publishes a boarding offer, so treat the rest as day schools unless the school tells you otherwise.
